As Bill Sees It
As Bill Sees It carries the subtitle of The A. A. Way of Life …Selected Writings of the A. A.’s Co-Founder. Much of what’s in this small volume is reprinted from AAs magazine, The Grapevine.
Not only is it a nice selection of Bill W.’s writing, it’s also got a subject index. That means you can look up, say Character Defects, and find are a whole bunch of pages dealing with just that.
Although not part of what I consider original source material, As Bill Sees It is another must-have for everyone in any 12 Step program.
With love, blessings, and gratitude,

We use “As Bill Sees It” as a book study on Sunday morning here in Jackson California. First, a topic is chosen from the index. Each paticipant gets a chance to read a passage and comment, and then all others have an open chance to comment. Much like paddling a canoe with many independent paddles. Fun for all, and it structures the meeting around one of our founders.

I have read many different daily devotionals, I consider “As Bill Sees It” to be deeply profound and spiritual. His insights into the very nature of man, our own character flaws as well as guidelines on how to daily better ourselves and perceive the world around us, was gained through immense pain, suffering and a brutal look in the mirror. If each day I am to read a section or two and ask myself how this applies to me, I think I will become more of the person I would like to be. I am not AA but my husband has been clean and sober for over 24 years and what he has learned over that time through the writings of Bill W is more precious than silver or gold.

This book is also great to get a topic discussion started in new or small meetings. As mentioned in the comment by “Jim” (on this page), the contents can be used to pick an AA topic. Then the chairperson or meeting host can keep track of the page numbers to be read by the people in the meeting, or the book can be passed around the room with the pages marked. This method creates a very flexible sharing format for a topic because the people can share as much or as little as they want. In small or new meetings, this helps get the ball rolling on any topic without having to be worried about any awkward moments of silence. If nobody wants to share after reading one of the pages, the group just moved on to the next page relevant to the topic. If the book gets all the way around the room with no comments by the people, the chairperson can pick or ask the group to pick another topic.
