Dazzle Us With Your BS
First Things First - we understand. Really :)
A simple thought as the result of sitting in approximately 10,000 meetings (very rough - 6638 days at 1 1/2 meetings per day) and having heard God only knows how many folks share plus “been there, done that.”
Ladies and gentlemen - you really don’t have to dazzle us with your bullshiiite, really. If you’re like so many of us and you have a need to impress us with your “right” to belong - it’s not needed. You belong if you say so, not by your “magnificent” intelligence. Take a look at your surroundings when you’re sitting in a meeting. That’s where your intelligence got you :)
Or - perhaps - you feel like the majority of us felt when we came strolling into AA? Less than…
We spent hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades - “out there” trying to convince our families, friends, co-workers, all those around us, that we were good enough. Except we didn’t believe that we were. We did it in so many instances by repeating things we had heard, things that sounded so wonderful to us that we knew they sounded wonderful to you also. Therefore, if we sounded wonderful, we were good enough. The problem was we had no clue what we were talking about. We weren’t being ourselves… we were wearing a mask.
Soooo - let’s see, try this on for size, for example. If you’re new to A.A. and actually haven’t worked a Second Step, please don’t take ten minutes in a Second Step meeting to share “all about God” with us. Try giving some thought to the insanity of the first drink and how you’ve been restored to enough soundness of mind that you don’t have to pick up the first drink today! Make the effort to understand there might be a rank newcomer with a day sitting in the same meeting that looks to you with two months as some kind of God - because he/she has been white-knuckling it for the last twenty four hours! That person has no clue how the he** you’ve done that! They also probably aren’t particularly happy with whatever “God” they understand either…
Or, because you haven’t done a Second Step, you are allowed to pass. It isn’t a rule that you are required to share… after all, you have two ears and one mouth for a very sound reason.
