Great Time For Random Acts Of Kindness

by Anne W. on December 20th, 2005

Practicing random acts of kindness isn’t normally thought of as a 12 Step tool, but it might be a good one, particularly this time of year. If you’re at all like me, you, along with so many, are semi-frantic getting ready for Christmas and other end-of-year holidays.

Traffic around malls is snarled, lines in stores are long and resentments are a breath away. It’s easy to get support for anger this time of year. At almost any 12 Step meeting, all you have to do is gripe a bit and chances are many will agree.

I find any time I start getting trapped in this sort of negative snarl, the quickest way out is a random act of kindness. Maybe I slow down a bit to let someone go ahead of me in traffic. Or hold open a door for someone laden with packages. Or even let someone go ahead of me in line.

What always happens is I feel better and often I get positive feedback, which is a bonus, but not required. Take a kindness break today. You and the world will be better for it.

With love, blessings, and gratitude,

Anne W., 12 Step Blogger

    Hi Anne:

I can’t agree with you more. If only we would embed kindness into ourselves like a lifestyle; it would be a better world.

I read last week about taking to time to write a comment to somebody that has received no comments in his blog. I think that is a good idea. Yours in another excellent idea. If we use these ideas to build a personality (like Lego blocks), we would be better persons.

I like the idea of smiling to others. The immediate reaction of the other person is to smile back. I do it all the time while driving to work and it works (no pun intended) all the time. Society is in need to smiles.

Have a Happy Holiday and a Prosperous New Year!

    Cheers,

    Omar.-
