Recovered? Recovering? The Argument Is Assinine!

by Mark on April 11th, 2008

At least in the “humble” (as much as it can be) opinion of my sponsor and myself, that is… :)

Why? First Things First - if it is a fact that you are sitting in meetings, dining out with “us,” hanging out with “us,” working with “us,” and admitting to “our faces” that you have admitted to your innermost self that you are an alcoholic, there is only one fact that rises in importance above all others!

You’ll have to remember this though - we all acknowledge a few other facts don’t we? How about this - alcoholism is a fatal, progressive and patient disease. Alcoholism kills. It kills both “guilty” and innocent. I say “guilty” to appease those who subject themselves to making society happy…

Alcoholism robs human beings of their health, wealth and love of others and of themselves. It is a thief. Alcoholism steals from our employers. Alcoholism removes financial stability. Alcoholism fills our hospitals with the broken lives of men, women and children. However alcoholism affects humanity in a negative manner, it will do just that.

With that being said, what is the single most important fact that rises above everything else? It certainly isn’t that you are recovered or I am recovering. The fact is that each and every single day that those of us who admit to being alcoholic and don’t pick up a drink of alcohol - it is a victory over death and destruction.

If you have an obsession to attempt to force your will on anyone, one way or another, recovered or recovering, and are obviously willing to fight over it, you most assuredly have not recovered from a hopeless state of mind and body.

But, that is only one man’s opinion…

Very well said. I don’t mind if people describe themselves as recovered - it’s an expression used in the Big Book. It’s just a pointless argument, what matters is not picking up a drink one day at a time and the best assurance of that is taking those steps.

You can call me “recovered” when I die - sober.

I love the speakers who start out with “my name so an so and I’m a real alcoholic and im recovered ” and “I know that some people dont like that ” and then they take the rest of the time explaining why they feel they are recovered . Oh boy that is when I pray we dont get a new guy or gal walking in for the first time , thinking that they too can be cured over night , Didnt we cover this in which came first the chicken or the egg?
As a doc on the idiot box says this guys a right fighter. MI never had it so good , today I sat for a state test and got jury duty God how far we come , to be asked to judge ,,,WOW LMFAO,,,The test was a wonderful experience no where near as hard as I thought ,,,gee sounds like something else I go though .I kept on waiting for the really hard part of the test and it didnt come .
And now to wait for the result , its in God hands now I have to remember its the effort and not the out come I’m responsible for .

Yeah - “And I know that some people don’t like that.” Man, if that isn’t hiding a bad motive under a good motive…

Sounds like you’re doing a lot of “waiting.” What’s with that?

Some days I feel like I am recovered and others like I am recovering. It doesn’t matter that much to me as long as I stay sober today.
