A Dozen Steps

The Heart Of True Sobriety

by Mark on July 2nd, 2008

Today’s Daily Reflection;

The Heart Of True Sobriety

“We find that no one need have difficulty with the spirituality of the program. Willingness, honesty and open-mindedness are the essentials of recovery. But these are indispensable.” Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 570

And we are then offered three questions:

  1. Am I honest enough to accept myself as I am and let this be the ‘me’ that I let others see? Yes_____ No_____
  2. Do I have the willingness to go to any length, to do whatever is necessary to stay sober? Yes_____ No_____
  3. Do I have the open-mindedness to hear what I have to hear, to think what I have to think, and to feel what I have to feel? Yes_____ No_____

Questions which may lead us to knowledge we didn’t think we had…

“If my answer to these questions is ‘Yes,” I know enough about the spirituality of the program to stay sober.

Then, “As I continue to work the Twelve Steps, I move on to the Heart of True Sobriety: serenity with myself, with others, and with God as I understand Him.

I no longer have the need to “manipulate” others to discover what I did in that black out I was in last night that those others didn’t know I was in… thankfully!

Hi Mark - I’m really glad you brought this up because I struggle with Q1, perhaps because I’m so early in recovery. Maybe I just don’t get it.

For me, today, I don’t know who I am, but I have an idea of the person I’d like to become.

Does this mean that I’m not authentic and back to playing make-believe?

Something tells me I should hush up until I work Step 7. Maybe that’s why I get so confused.

Let’s see… First Things First - “Maybe I just don’t get it - YET.” You will.

Secondly, KISS - you’re most assuredly NOT the person you used to be which is good enough.

Thirdly - there are only two acceptable “Something tells me” which are your HP and your sponsor. Anything else, for now, need not count.
