The Principle That Works Most Often For Me
To bring me peace of mind which I lose on many occasions.
It’s on pages 104-5 in our 12&12. I first made this a part of my life when the divorce was happening. Now it often brings me back to the God I understand.
“We discover that we do receive guidance for our lives to just about the extent that we stop making demands upon God to give it to us on order and on our terms.”
Do you think you understand this? What do you do when life doesn’t go your way? Do you complain? Do you “wish” something would happen to your benefit when it seems it is going in the opposite direction? Do you get aggravated or angry? Do you become depressed?
I do… and I complain to God. I say something along the lines of “god dammit!” Or - “Come on God, quit bustin’ my shoes here, will ya’?” When I say these things, I am making a demand upon God. I am telling Him He is wrong and I want what I want.
“Almost any experienced A.A. will tell how his affairs have taken remarkable and unexpected turns for the better as he tried to improve his conscious contact with God.”
True enough, yet the lack of permanence, for me, has become deeply depressing.
“He will also report that out of every season of grief or suffering, when the hand of God seemed heavy or even unjust, new lessons for living were learned, new resources of courage were uncovered, and that finally, inescapably, the conviction came that God does ‘move in a mysterious way His wonders to perform.’”
If I take what for me is a risk to have faith in this wisdom, I can live a better, happier life. When I’m down and allowing fear to rule my thoughts I’ll mentally refuse to even take the risk to have faith. There is a challenge to get past - with help!
The next paragraph lays out the solution;
“All of us, without exception, pass through times when we can pray only with the greatest exertion of will. Occasionally we go even further than this. We are seized with a rebellion so sickening that we simply won’t pray. When these things happen we should not think too ill of ourselves. We should simply resume prayer as soon as we can, doing what we know to be good for us.”
Once again, I’m not alone nor are you! It happens to all of us! And the answer is simple!
